October 2018: Title IX Memo + Title VII SCOTUS Case

On October 21, 2018, the Department of Health and Human Services released a memo about Title IX, suggesting federally redefining sex under Title IX according to genitalia observed at birth and proposing genetic tests to settle legal disputes. This would be adopted by numerous federal departments and would repeal civil rights protections for trans people.

Beginning October 24 of that same year, the Supreme Court was petitioned to hear a case regarding the interpretation of Title VII; they heard the case in October 2019. The case revolves around Aimee Stephens, a trans woman who was fired from her job at a mortuary after informing her employer she would begin following the dress code laid out for women rather than men.
